I was a self-employed makeup artist working part time. My husband is a school teacher. We had a mortgage, an RRSP and a car payment. Although we could not understand how our friends could afford boats, vacations and designer clothes, we managed somehow to pay our bills each month and thought we were financially intelligent and responsible. Having both been divorced and leaving with nothing, we were quite proud that we were doing as well as we were after being a couple for just 3 years and already having 2 kids together.
Suddenly our lives turned into a whirlwind and we dug ourselves into a hole we never thought we could escape.
Just before Christmas, we had a house fire that left us living in a hotel room with a baby and a toddler. Just a week after the holidays, our six-month-old niece died unexpectedly. Now, as if that was not enough to deal with, we got the worse news of our lives. We were told that our baby boy was dying. I lived in the hospital with him for seven weeks and watched him endure tests and painful procedures that gave no answers.
The loss of my income, the medical bills and recovering from the fire was just the beginning of our financial downfall. Just as we were struggling to figure out how we would get by, the teachers union went on strike. Now instead of just worrying about our growing debt, we were wondering how we were going to eat. We felt like we were under attack, getting it from all sides. The intense stress had us heading straight for a divorce and claiming bankruptcy seemed like our only option. We prayed desperately for a way out from under this mess. We called our realtor and told him that we needed to sell our house immediately so that we could pay off some of our debt. He listed our house and recommended we read a book. We had no money to buy a book; but we were out of options at this point. My husband went to a used bookstore and bought the book that changed our lives forever.
Now, since this book has been a NY time’s bestseller for many years, thousands had obviously read it. What separates the winners from the losers is taking action.
I did not even know how a mortgage worked when I read this book but it inspired me to get financially educated. My then 3-year-old son was able to grasp the concepts. He is now 6 years old, a business owner and wealthier then most working Canadians. Now we are living a life we never dreamed possible. I now own millions of dollars worth of real estate and have started property development in Brazil, one of the 4 future economic super countries in the world.
My husband has now retired in his mid 30's. I am a stay at home mom caring for a beautiful 4-year old with special needs and a smart little six-year-old entrepreneur. Having a cook, a maid and a maintenance man makes life sweeter as we are able to travel the world and spend our time on more important things like our kids and each other.
Financial freedom has taken away a lot of stress and allowed us to help so many people around the world. Our goal is to build unconventional orphanages in Africa.
It is amazing what can happen when you change your mindset and educate yourself. My hope is that you will choose to get educated so that you can also make a difference in your life and the lives of others around the world.
